What are Push Categories?
Push Categories offer your app users the ability to customize what types of push messages they receive. This allows users to only be notified of content that is relevant to them, instead of seeing all or nothing. Here are examples of push message categories different organizations are using:
With Church Push Categories, users can choose between different ministries they are a part of, as well as specific news, events, groups, and reading plans.
With Tourism Push Categories, users can choose if they would like to be notified about events in the area, deals and discounts, as well as emergency alerts and local news.
College app users can choose their current status (Prospect, Current Student, International, Staff), as well as what events they wish to be notified about (Weather, Sports, Announcements). Push categories allow for students to get an immersive experience on campus without being overwhelmed with notifications.
How do I set up Push Categories?
Push categories are enabled on the back end of your app. To add or change your push categories during Implementation, contact your Customer Success Manager. They are your best resource when deciding what and how many categories you should use. If you've already launched your app, send any requests for additions or modifications to firstname.lastname@example.org.
How do I send Push messages to different Categories?
Sending a Push Message to a Category is much like sending a generic Push Message. For the basics on how to create and send a message, click here.
To select a Category when sending your message, drag and drop the "Category" Draggable when you reach the "Who" tab of your message.
When you click in the "Push Categories" editable area, it will open a drop down menu of all the possible categories enabled in your app. You can select as many categories as you would like.
How many Push Categories can I have?
Best practices recommend no more than 10-12 push categories for a single app. This is because about 12 lines of text will fit on most screens, and users typically won't want to scroll down to select push categories. Additionally, 12 categories is a lot to maintain when ensuring that users get specific content.
How do users opt-in to Push Categories?
When users download you app, they will be asked if they would like to receive push notifications.
Then, to choose which notifications they would like to get, users navigate to the Message Center, and tap on the filter in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
Check marks mean that the user is currently opted in to that category. To remove their device from that category, they simply click the corresponding line. They will no longer receive messages for that group.
